Netflix Case Study: Bringing 4K and HDR to Anime
While live-action content has been produced in 4K and HDR for a number of years, Japanese anime productions have struggled to upgrade their production pipelines or move into a fully digital model. Looking for workflow efficiencies that would provide more creative freedom and a wider creative palette, Netflix initiated a project for 2D hand-drawn anime to leverage 4K and HDR from conceptualization to finish. This case study details the motivation for the project, how the entire production process had to change in order to produce imagery in HDR, the technical challenges that presented, as well as the creative opportunities and considerations for the future of anime. This session explores HDR, content production, 4K, and a discussion of workflow and the entire anime pipeline in Japan as a case study.
